A thoroughly reduced arrangement of "Troika" from the orchestral suite "Lieutenant Kije" by Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) for wind sextet. The name means "Sleigh Ride" and so this piece is often associated with Christmas. However, the whole suite is actually a satirical story for an early Russian film, and a sleigh ride was simply a method of moving around in the depths of a Russian winter. The piece does however capture all the excitement of galloping horses and the swishing of snow as the sleigh hurtles along. The arrangement here is intended to encourage audience participation, perhaps by adding the jangling of keys to the percussion parts!
